Residual Seal Force

Jun. 26, 2026

Test Principle

Residual Seal Force (RSF) is a non-destructive seal quality test that measures the vertical force generated by a compressed elastomeric stopper on the vial land sealing surface after crimping with an aluminium seal. The RSF tester applies a constant rate of compression onto the top of a sealed vial and records the resultant stress-strain profile, from which the RSF value is derived. A higher RSF value indicates greater stopper compression and a tighter seal; an optimal RSF range correlates with consistently low leak rates. RSF is an indirect measure of container closure integrity – it does not directly detect leaks, but rather characterises the quality and consistency of the capping process.
